Inside Adelaide Active’s Hydrotherapy Pool: What to Expect from Your First Session

If you’ve been referred to a hydrotherapy pool in Adelaide and you’re not quite sure what to expect, that’s completely normal. Many people feel unsure before their first session, especially if they are managing pain, recovering from surgery, or living with a disability.

At Adelaide Active, our goal is simple. We want you to feel safe, supported, and confident from the moment you arrive.

Here’s a step by step look at what your first hydrotherapy session might involve.

What Is Hydrotherapy?

Hydrotherapy is guided exercise performed in a warm, purpose-built therapy pool. The warmth of the water helps relax muscles and improve circulation, while the natural buoyancy reduces pressure on joints and allows you to move more comfortably.

For many people, exercises that feel difficult on land become much easier in water.

Hydrotherapy can help with:

  • Arthritis and joint pain
  • Post-surgery rehabilitation
  • Back and neck pain
  • Neurological conditions
  • NDIS-supported physical therapy goals
  • General strength, balance, and mobility

Before You Get in the Pool

Your first session begins with a conversation and assessment. Your physiotherapist or exercise physiologist will talk through:

  • Your medical history
  • Your current symptoms
  • Your goals
  • Any concerns about being in the water

If you feel nervous, let us know. Many first-time clients do. We take things at your pace.

You’ll be shown the facilities, including change rooms and pool access. If you use mobility aids or require assistance, we’ll guide you through the safest way to enter and exit the pool.

Getting Into the Hydrotherapy Pool

Our hydrotherapy pool in Adelaide is heated to a therapeutic temperature, designed to ease stiffness and promote comfort.

Depending on your needs, you may:

  • Walk in using gradual steps with a handrail
  • Use assisted access equipment if required
  • Be supported by your therapist during entry

You are never rushed. Your comfort comes first.

What Happens During the Session?

Your therapist will guide you through gentle, targeted exercises designed specifically for your body and goals.

This might include:

  • Walking exercises to improve balance
  • Light resistance movements to build strength
  • Range of motion exercises for stiff joints
  • Core stability work for back support

The water provides natural resistance without heavy impact, which makes it ideal for people who find land-based exercise painful or tiring.

Sessions usually run for around 30 to 45 minutes, depending on your program.

After the Session

Once you finish, you’ll exit the pool safely with guidance. Many people notice they feel lighter, looser, and more relaxed after their first session.

It’s common to feel gently worked, similar to a light gym session. Your therapist will check in with you and may adjust future sessions based on how you respond.

A Safe and Supportive Environment

For new patients and NDIS coordinators, reassurance matters. At Adelaide Active:

  • Programs are individualised
  • Sessions are supervised by qqualified clinicians
  • Progress is tracked and communicated clearly
