The Benefits of Exercise for People Living with Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic autoimmune condition that affects the central nervous system. It impacts millions of people worldwide and can significantly alter day-to-day function and quality of life. While symptoms vary depending on the type and severity of MS, many individuals experience fatigue, heat sensitivity, muscle spasticity, pain, sensory changes, tremor, bladder and bowel issues, and cognitive or emotional challenges.
At Adelaide Active, we’re passionate about supporting people living with MS through evidence-based movement and community care.
How Exercise Can Help Manage MS Symptoms
Research shows that regular physical activity can be incredibly beneficial for people with MS. In fact, those who avoid exercise are more likely to experience a worsening of symptoms over time.
Benefits of Exercise for MS:
Improved energy and reduced fatigue Aerobic and strength training have been shown to significantly reduce MS-related fatigue levels.
Better balance and reduced falls risk Functional and balance training helps improve stability and coordination, reducing the likelihood of falls.
Increased strength and mobility Resistance exercises support muscle tone and help maintain independence.
Improved cardiovascular health and longevity Exercise lowers the risk of heart disease and supports long-term wellbeing.
Enhanced mood and mental wellbeing Exercise can reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression, offering psychological support through movement.
Is Exercise Safe for MS?
Yes, with the right support. For individuals with mild to moderate MS, structured programs that include aerobic, resistance, and balance training are both safe and effective. It’s important that the intensity and type of exercise are matched to each person’s ability and stage of MS.
Working with qualified professionals, like an Accredited Exercise Physiologist, ensures a tailored and safe approach that adapts with your needs.
